MIXED MEDIA

Soji "Shakes" Oyinsan

Soji ‘Shakes’ Oyinsan, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, is a multidisciplinary artist and video editor whose
work encompasses both commercial media and fine art. A self-taught painter, Oyinsan’s vibrant and
introspective style reflects his personal journey across various cultures, having lived in England, Italy, and
now Toronto. His art embodies bold abstract expressionism, drawing parallels to the dynamic styles of
artists like Jack Kabangu, Adebayo Bolaji, Saheed Pratt and Chris Ofili while maintaining his own playful and intuitive approach.
Oyinsan's art is a fusion of diverse influences; his career as a video editor—covering commercials,
fashion films, documentaries, and music videos—grounds him in technical precision and visual
storytelling. Yet, it’s in his abstract paintings and mixed media animations where his true self-expression
comes alive. Utilizing bold colors and an unfiltered energy, he explores themes of Blackness,
NIgerian/Yoruba mythology, and Identity. His creative process is fluid and improvisational, blending
spontaneity with introspection.
Deeply influenced by music and film, Oyinsan’s works create a multi-sensory experience. The vibrant
chaos of colors and textures encourages viewers to connect with their emotions, balancing raw energy
with intimate reflections. His pieces reveal layers of exploration and a quest for equilibrium between light
and dark, order and chaos.
Whether on canvas or screen, Soji Oyinsan’s artistic voice is both thoughtful and daring. He invites
audiences to engage with art not just visually, but as a joyful exploration of self and culture.
